Today, according to UNESCO, almost one billion people in the world cannot read at all. Most of them are living in developing countries―75 percent of them in Asia and 18 percent in Africa.
UNESCO is worried about the situation. They named the year 1990 the "International Literacy Year" and started a campaign for more schools in developing countries.
Many groups and individuals from every part of the world are now taking part in this campaign. All of them are volunteers. They are building schoolhouses, collecting money, or teaching at the local schools.
The volunteers' work is very helpful to the people of developing countries. They know that reading and writing make their life better. But they cannot build many schools by themselves.
